Shenhua writes to CFA to take action against Sun for Ba’s injury

SHANGHAI Greenland Shenhua has accused Shanghai SIPG captain Sun Xiang of committing a vicious foul on star striker Demba Ba that broke his leg and is asking the Chinese Football Association to take action against the SIPG defender.

In a letter to CFA, Shenhua listed a number of “violent” tackles committed by SIPG players during Sunday’s derby match at Hongkou Stadium, which Shenhua won 2-1.

“In the 20th minute of the second half, our player Demba Ba, who was attacking, was deliberately kicked by the opponent defender Sun Xiang. Ba was seriously injured and the hospital’s medical report showed he suffered tibia and fibula fracture in leg. It was a flagrant foul!” the letter said.

The letter also mentioned three other fouls by SIPG players including Sun hitting Shenhua’s Lv Zheng in the eye at the end of the first half. It also criticized SIPG midfielder Cai Huikang for striking Shenhua’s Wang Yun with his elbow and stepping on Giovanni Moreno’s knee during extra time.

“We urge CSL’s discipline committee to review the match video and punish Sun and Cai for their actions,” said the letter, which was posted on the club’s official Weibo page today afternoon.

Sun had paid a visit to Ba at Putuo District People’s Hospital earlier in the day with SIPG General Manager Sui Guoyang.

“I had to come because he was injured after clashing with me,” Sun said after meeting Ba. “I feel guilty, so I came to apologize. Hope he recovers quickly. Physical contacts on the pitch is unavoidable. But it was definitely not deliberate.”

Sun said he shook hands with Ba and wished him a quick recovery.

“Ba was understanding. He said let bygones be bygones and that’s what life is about,” Sun said. “Hope it’s the first time and also the last time (that I cause such a serious injury). To a professional player, injury is not a good thing.”

Greenland Shenhua head coach Gregorio Manzano as well as players Giovanni Moreno, Fredy Guarin, Obafemi Martins, Cao Yunding, Li Shuai, Qin Sheng visited Ba at the hospital today. Most of them were making a second visit to the hospital.

The Senegal striker has yet to decide whether he will have the surgery in Shanghai or in France, though local doctors are not keen that he travels now.

Shenhua officials said Ba was in extreme pain on the way to the hospital and had to be anesthetized before receiving bone restoration treatment.

Team interpreter Zhang Chuan said Ba asked him for the result of the match after he woke up in the middle of the night.
