Shanghai SIPG striker Asamoah Gyan joins UAE’s Al Ahli on 1-year loan

Shanghai SIPG’s Asamoah Gyan is leaving Chinese Super League for UAE side Al Ahli on a one-year loan, according to a statement on the Ghanaian striker’s official website.

“Arabian Gulf League (AGL) champions Al Ahli have strengthened their attack with the acquisition of former Al Ain striker Asamoah Gyan. The 30-year-old has returned to the UAE, on a one-year loan deal, just 12 months after signing from Chinese Super League outfit Shanghai SIPG,” said the statement.

Al Ahli is a fierce rival of Al Ain, where Gyan spent four productive years between 2012 and mid-2015. He then joined Sven-Goran Eriksson’s SIPG on a two-year deal and was reportedly earning a weekly salary of 227,000 pounds (US$298,000). However, the Ghana captain had been bothered by injuries and was replaced by Brazilian international Hulk in July during the summer transfer.

The statement said Al Ahli manager Cosmin Olaroiu always admired Gyan, who scored 95 goals in 83 league matches in his former spell in the UAE.

Gyan was previously link to English Championship side Reading FC, and was said to be undergoing medical test with the second tier league club. He later unveiled that the deal had not been reached due to the two sides’ disagreements over contract details.
