SIPG tastes 1st victory of season as Shenhua held

SHANGHAI SIPG finally claimed its first league victory of the 2016 season after beating Liaoning Whowin 4-0 at Shanghai Stadium yesterday.

Striker Wu Lei scored and had two assists, while Elkeson and substitute Asamoah Gyan each added a goal. It was also Elkeson’s first Chinese Super League goal for SIPG, though the Brazilian has found the net three times in four AFC Champions League games for SIPG.

“This victory is very timely,” said SIPG’s Swedish head coach Sven-Goran Eriksson. “Compared to the previous three league matches, today we showed the determination and spirit that we failed to present before. The two goals in the first half forced our opponents to push forward, which left us with more scoring chances. I think we’ve found a way to win matches, and hope it will continue.”

SIPG’s first goal came pretty early when an unmarked Lu Wenjun stabbed the ball in from a pass by Wang Shenchao nine minutes in. At the end of the first half, Wu had extended the lead, scoring on an accurate pass by Dario Conca.

After scoring in the 70th, Elkeson made way for Gyan in the 76th, and the latter beat the offside trap to find the back of the net just three minutes later.

For Wu, it was the fourth straight match where he has scored — the previous three matches being China’s World Cup qualifier against Qatar; a CSL game against Chongqing Lifan and an AFC Champions League match against Osaka Gamba.

French media reported that Ligue 1 side FC Nantes is interested in signing the 24-year-old Wu this summer.

The victory lifted SIPG from 14th in the standing to a shared seventh place on five points from four matches.

Later in the day, SIPG’s city rival Greenland Shenhua was held to a goalless draw by Shandong Luneng at Hongkou Football Stadium. It is fifth on six points along with Hangzhou Greentown.

“It was an exciting match as both teams were very committed,” said Shenhua coach Gregorio Manzano. “It’s not a sweet result, but the team is growing stronger.”

In a Saturday match, Manzano’s former team Beijing Guo’an was beaten 0-3 by defending champion Guangzhou Evergrande. Striker Gao Lin scored his 78th goal for the team, becoming Evergrande’s top scorer in history. It was Evergrande’s third straight league victory despite the Asian champion’s poor performance in the AFC Champions League.

It is second in the 16-team CSL table on 9 points, one less than Jiangsu Suning.

Guo’an’s new Italian coach Alberto Zaccheroni is under scrutiny after Beijing has only one point from its first three CSL matches. “I’m also worried,” said the former AC Milan manager. “It has never happened that Guo’an has failed to win a single match after three rounds into a season. But there are lots of reasons.”
