Record spending puts English clubs on top

THE English Premier League dominated as Europe’s top clubs spent more than US$3 billion on new players in the two-month transfer market that ended with a frantic burst of deals on Monday, according to a study released yesterday.

The 20 Premier League clubs spent about 835 million pounds (US$1.38 billion) on players, with Manchester United accounting for about 150 million pounds of that, according to business consultant Deloitte.

The Premier League total smashed last year’s record transfer dealings worth 630 million pounds. Colombian striker Radamel Falcao joined United while England striker Danny Welbeck left for Arsenal in the final deals announced late on Monday.

Spain’s La Liga clubs laid out just over US$700 million (530 million euros) on players, with Real Madrid and Barcelona the big spenders on the likes of Luis Suarez and James Rodriguez, respectively.

Colombian Rodriguez, top goalscorer at the World Cup, joined Real from Monaco for some 80 million euros, while Uruguay’s Luis Suarez, thrown out of the tournament for biting an Italian opponent, moved to Barcelona from Liverpool for around 65 million pounds.

Italy’s Serie A followed with US$450 million of deals, Germany’s Bundesliga accounted for US$415 million and France’s Ligue 1 came fifth with deals worth US$165 million.

FIFA’s Transfer Matching System said that 1,164 players were taken on in the big five leagues during the transfer window and that the five accounted for 85% of the transfer money spent in Europe’s 26 biggest leagues. Clubs now cannot buy new players again until January.

Increased domestic and international broadcast deals fuelled the spending by English clubs, with United paying 150 million pounds as part of its rebuilding under Louis van Gaal. That’s the most spent by a Premier League club in a summer window. United, English champion a record 20 times, finished a disappointing seventh last season.

The Red Devils also signed Dutch international Daley Blind for 14 million pounds from Ajax Amsterdam and Argentina midfielder Angel di Maria for a British-record 59.7 million pounds from Real, having started their summer dealings with the 29-million pound capture of midfielder Ander Herrera from Athletic Bilbao.

“We continue to see the increased resources that Premier League clubs enjoy, as a result of improved broadcast deals, translate into investment in players,” said Dan Jones, of Deloitte’s Sports Business Group.

There was also a record net spend by Premier League clubs of 410 million pounds, only marginally higher than the previous highest from last summer with teams still having to abide by financial fair play regulations.
