Oscar handed 8-match brawl ban

SHANGHAI SIPG’s most expensive signing Oscar was given an eight-match ban and a 40,000-yuan (US$5,854) fine by the Chinese Football Association for “offending other players which sparked a large-scale brawl on the pitch”, according to a notice issued by the association yesterday.
Oscar was in the spotlight after a fiery Chinese Super League clash between SIPG and Guangzhou R&F in Guangdong Province last Sunday, which ended 1-1.
The brawl occurred in first-half injury time when Oscar was angrily confronted by opponents after twice appearing to deliberately kick the ball at R&F players.
The Brazilian was then pushed down by R&F’s Chen Zhizhao while midfielder Li Tixiang allegedly stepped on him. Li and SIPG defender Fu Huan were sent off in the aftermath of the brawl.
According to the CFA’s notice, Fu was banned for six CSL matches and received a 30,000-yuan fine for “pushing an opponent player too hard in chaotic situation and causing negative influence on China’s professional league”.
Chen was given a seven-match ban and a 35,000-yuan fine, while Li was banned for five matches and fined 25,000 yuan.
The two clubs were publicly reprimanded and fined 50,000 yuan each.
The CFA was initially unsure about how to punish the 25-year-old Brazilian, and wrote to FIFA for advise following a disciplinary hearing on Wednesday. The former Chelsea midfielder did not attend the hearing.
Oscar said after the match that it’s not true that he disrespected his opponents. “I am a dedicated player and respect sportsmanship,” he insisted
SIPG manager Andre Villas-Boas also backed up his player, saying Oscar had acted in the interests of the team.
“Oscar is not a dirty player. I believe he was hoping to show some passion and fighting spirit,” the former Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur coach said at the post-match press conference.
There are still 17 rounds to go in the CSL. Oscar will not be eligible to play until August 13, including SIPG’s home match against leader and defending champion Guangzhou Evergrande on July 22. He has scored four goals and provided 10 assists in his 21 appearances for the club since his record 60-million euro (US$66.96 million) transfer from Chelsea in January.
SIPG is now second in the 16-team standing, four points behind Evergrande. Villas-Boas has a choice of filling the foreign player quota with fellow Portuguese and veteran defender Ricardo Carvalho for the next eight matches.
The punishment was the latest move by the CFA to stamp out indiscipline as the profile of the CSL grows overseas.
Shanghai Greenland Shenhua’s Qin Sheng was given a six-month ban in March for stamping on the foot of Tianjin Quanjian’s Belgium international Axel Witsel in a game that was televised internationally.
