It’s a Real experience for Guti

FORMER Real Madrid player Jose Maria “Guti” Gutierrez Hernandez was on hand as the Real Madrid Foundation Campus Experience was formally launched at American University High School in suburban Minhang District yesterday.

The training camp, during the school summer vacation, will see coaches from the Spanish La Liga side provide guidance to young Chinese footballers aged between 7 and 17.

The first leg of the training camp will be held in Shanghai and will feature local students and those from neighboring Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces. Among them are a few young talents recommended by the Minhang District government, which will also cover their camp fees. The second and third legs will be held in Beijing and Chengdu, Sichuan Province.

“We want to pass the Real Madrid spirit on to young players — never give up and always strive for victory,” former Real vice captain Guti said.

Guti spent 25 years of his career at Real, helping the Spanish giant to 15 trophies. He joined Turkey’s Besiktas in 2010 and announced his retirement two years later. The 38-year-old said he had gained all qualifications to become a coach and would give it a serious thought if any Chinese club approached him.

“I know China has been seeking to develop football and has a great potential. It has hired some famous Spanish coaches, including former Real player and coach Jose Antonio Camacho (who was national team coach from 2011 to 2013). The children should not stop playing when the camp is over.”
