Inter shuts out Lyon in preseason Nanjing friendly
A BUMPY pitch and hot weather took the shine off Inter Milan’s 1-0 victory over Olympique Lyonnais last night in a preseason friendly held in east China’s Jiangsu Province, as part of the International Champions Cup.
The match at Nanjing Olympic Sports Centre — home of Chinese Super League’s Jiangsu Suning — saw both sides struggle with the poor surface and humidity.
The city’s weather bureau issued a red heatwave alert earlier as temperatures hit 39 degrees Celsius, although the mercury dropped by the start of the match.
There was little action until the 19th minute, when Lyon’s Bertrand Traore let fly from around 20 meters out only for the ball to narrowly sail over the bar.
Inter pulled ahead in the 75th when Joao Mario broke down the right flank and squared the ball to an unmarked Stevan Jovetic, who scored the only goal.
After the final whistle, the Inter players held up a banner in Chinese that read: “All of the world is one family — thank you for your support” in front of a delighted crowd.
Meanwhile, Chelsea boss Antonio Conte said yesterday that forward Pedro sustained “multiple fractures” to his face after colliding with Arsenal goalkeeper David Ospina on Saturday .
The 29-year-old Spaniard was taken to hospital with a bloodied face after Ospina flew into him while clearing a ball with two fists during the Blues’ 3-0 ICC win in Beijing. Pedro spent the night in a Beijing hospital and returned to London the following day.
Speaking in Singapore ahead of another ICC match against Bayern Munich today, Conte said: “The situation was more serious because I hoped that it would only be a concussion.
“Instead he had multiple fractures and I think with a mask in 10 days, he could come back to work for us.”
