Hulk scores on CSL debut as SIPG wins

SHANGHAI SIPG’s new record-signing Hulk needed just 8-1/2 minutes to prove his value, scoring the opener in SIPG’s 5-0 Chinese Super League romp over Henan Jianye at Shanghai Stadium last night.

However, it was a bitter-sweet debut for the Brazilian international, who was taken off the pitch on a stretcher just 19 minutes after kick-off.

Hulk joined SIPG earlier this month on a reported 55.8-million euro (US$61.9 million) transfer from Zenit St Petersburg. Making his SIPG debut, the 30-year-old burly forward was often defended by three or four Henan defenders whenever he had the ball.

Hulk’s goal came off a right-wing cross from Wu Lei, the Brazilian stabbing the ball home, beating two defenders.

However, five minutes later, Hulk was lying on the pitch after seemingly pulling his left leg muscle. Reluctant to end his debut too early, the Brazilian held on for another few minutes, but fell on the grass again in the 19th after contact with a rival player. Coach Sven-Goran Eriksson then substituted him with Lu Wenjun. The club did not say how serious the injury was.

Elkeson took over the attack from his compatriot, scoring SIPG’s second goal in the 32nd.

Any chance of a Henan comeback was stymied in the 37th when defender Li Xiaoming was given a second yellow card for a dangerous tackle. SIPG was hardly pressured in the second half as Wu, Lu and Jean Evrard Kouassi scored to settle the final score at 5-0.

The victory helped SIPG climb up to a shared third-place in the standings on 30 points, same as Hebei China Fortune, which lost 0-2 to Guangzhou R&F.

Another Shanghai team Greenland Shenhua lost 0-2 to Yanbian Funde in Yanji, Jilin Province, on Saturday. The hosts were given a penalty in the 67th after a foul in the box by Shenhua’s South Korean defender Kim Kee-hee. Yanbian’s Serbian defender Nikola Petkovic scored from the spot. The second goal came in the 88th when Shenhua goalie Li Shuai left the box for a clearance but missed the ball, leaving an empty goal for Yanbian’s Kim Seung-dae to score.

Shenhua is fifth on 25 points. Spanish head coach Gregorio Manzano insisted afterwards that his team was the better side in the match, if only the players had seized their chances and had better luck.

In another match, Guangzhou Evergrande beat Chongqing Lifan 4-1 to maintain its lead at the top, it has 42 points.

In a Saturday match, Shandong Luneng ended its 10-match winless streak by beating second-ranked Jiangsu Suning 2-1 in Shandong. Argentine midfielder Walter Montillo contributed a brace.

Earlier in the day, Shandong announced the signing of former Newcastle United striker Papiss Cisse through its official website. The deal was reportedly worth 2.5 million pounds (US$3.24 million), and the 31-year-old Senegal international will reportedly receive 3 million pounds a season.
