Gillot cites family issues for exit

Francis Gillot has cited family issues in seeking to prematurely end his coaching contract with Shanghai Greenland Shenhua.

This follows the 55-year-old’s announcement on Sunday after the CFA Cup final, when he said that he would no longer be the Chinese Super League side’s head coach. Shenhua lost at home to Jiangsu Sainty 0-1 in the second leg, following a goalless first-leg draw, to miss out on the Cup, which also brings along a spot in next season’s AFC Champions League. Shenhua also finished 6th in the 16-team CSL.

This led to speculation that the club had sacked Gillot, who signed a two-year contract only in December 2014 at an annual salary of 2.5 million euros (US$3.1 million).

Shenhua said yesterday the decision to terminate Gillot’s contract was taken in October when the Frenchman handed in his resignation letter to club president Wu Xiaohui citing personal reasons.

Gillot’s wife accompanied him to Shanghai at the beginning of the year, but later returned home due to stomach illness. She was hospitalized in France in September. Gillot’s father-in-law also suffered “serious illness” during the time, the culmination of which led to the Frenchman’s decision to end his contract a year early to be with his family.

In his resignation letter, Gillot thanked Wu for his trust and support.

“During my work with the club, I experienced the difference of Eastern and Western culture, as well as cooperation and mutual respect among colleagues,” he wrote.

Gillot and his coaching team had a farewell meal with Shenhua players, officials and staff yesterday noon, and left for Paris by a night flight.
