Eriksson signs up as coach of second-tier Shenzhen

FORMER Shanghai SIPG manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has joined China’s second-tier league side Shenzhen FC, replacing former Dutch international Clarence Seedorf, the club announced through its official Weibo account yesterday morning.

The club’s statement said the decision was made bearing in mind the team’s ambitions, and thanked Seedorf and his coaching team for their devotion.

“Mr Eriksson is a world-renowned experienced manager. He has been coaching in China since June 2013, and is familiar with Chinese football. We hope his arrival will help Shenzhen attract the world’s attention and build the club into a name card for the city,” said the statement.

The two sides are reported to have signed a 1+2 deal — if Eriksson leads Shenzhen into the top-tier Chinese Super League at the end of the 2017 season, the contract will be automatically extended for two more years. If not, the Swede will be let go.

Shenzhen finished ninth in the 16-team League One in 2016. It named former AC Milan manager Seedorf as its head coach last July. The club is known for the quality of its young players, and reached a peak in 2004, winning the CSL title. Since then it has struggled to match the same success and was relegated to the second division at the end of the 2011 season.

Eriksson is making a return to south China’s Guangdong Province, having coached Guangzhou R&F from 2013 to 2014 before joining SIPG.

The 68-year-old former England coach was replaced by former Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur boss Andre Villas-Boas of Portugal last month after spending two years in Shanghai. He led SIPG to its first AFC Champions League appearance, and the club finished third in the CSL last year.
