CFA bans Zheng for 3 matches on appeal

CHINESE national team and Guangzhou Evergrande captain Zheng Zhi has been banned for three matches and fined 15,000 yuan (US$2,421) for stepping on a player’s leg during a recent Chinese Super League match.
The 34-year-old was fighting for the ball with Guizhou Renhe’s Brazilian midfielder Hyuri in their CSL match in Guangzhou on Sunday, when it went out of bounds and Hyuri fell in front of Zheng. Zheng then stepped on Hyuri’s leg, which sparked a mini melee among players and officials of the two sides.
Instead of punishing Zheng, referee Ai Kun showed a yellow card to another Renhe player Ricardo Santos who argued about the decision.
The Guizhou club then filed an appeal with the China Football Association. The CFA disciplinary committee decided this week to ban Zheng for three league games for “committing violence”. This is the lightest punishment for such a violation, which also means that the national captain will not miss China’s first 2018 World Cup Asia qualifier against Bhutan on June 16.
According to Beijing Youth Daily, the light punishment was given considering Zheng’s “sincerity”, after he reportedly handed in an apology letter to the CFA, though he insisted that his action was not deliberate.
Evergrande blanked Renhe 3-0 to stay joint top of the CSL, but will lose its talismanic captain for the next three league clashes against Tianjin Teda and championship rivals Shandong Luneng and Beijing Guo’an.
