Ba to go under knife for leg injury

SHANGHAI Greenland Shenhua striker Demba Ba has decided to have surgery on his fractured leg in Shanghai, in the aftermath of the horror tackle he suffered during Sunday’s Chinese Super League derby against Shanghai SIPG.

The decision was taken by the Senegal star and his family after consulting both Shanghai doctors and a French medical team. The surgery will take place on Friday and will be undertaken by a French doctor who will arrive on Thursday.

The 31-year-old forward broke his leg in a challenge from SIPG captain Sun Xiang during the second half of the game at Hongkou Football Stadium. He was rushed to Putuo District People’s Hospital. X-ray results showed that he had suffered tibia and fibula fracture in his left leg.

Experts from Huashan and Changhai hospitals were brought in and Ba was given restoration treatment. Shenhua said the pain in Ba’s leg had eased by yesterday morning and he was in stable condition.

Sun visited Ba at the hospital yesterday, along with SIPG General Manager Sui Guoyang.

“I had to come because he was injured after clashing with me,” Sun said after meeting Ba. “I feel guilty, so I came to apologize. Hope he recovers quickly. Physical contacts on the pitch are unavoidable. But it was definitely not deliberate.”

“Ba was very understanding. He said let bygones be bygones and that’s what life is about,” Sun added. “Hope it’s the first time and also the last time (that I cause such a serious injury). To a professional player, injury is not a good thing.”

Shenhua head coach Gregorio Manzano as well as players Giovanni Moreno, Fredy Guarin, Obafemi Martins, Cao Yunding, Li Shuai and Qin Sheng visited Ba yesterday afternoon. Most of them were making a second visit to the hospital.

Manzano said at the post-match press conference on Sunday that it was the kind of foul that could end a player’s career.

Ten years ago, Ba, who joined Shenhua in June last year from Turkey’s Besiktas on a three-year deal, suffered a similar injury in his left leg while playing for Belgian club Mouscron.

Smarting from the horrific injury to its target man, who is the CSL top scorer this season with 14 goals, Shenhua handed a letter to the Chinese Football Association yesterday, accusing Sun of committing a “vicious foul” during Sunday’s match, which Shenhua won 2-1.

“In the 20th minute of the second half, our player Demba Ba was deliberately kicked by the opposite defender Sun Xiang. Ba was seriously injured and the hospital’s medical report shows he suffered tibia and fibula fracture in the leg. It was a flagrant foul!” the letter said.

The letter also mentioned three other fouls by SIPG players, including Sun hitting Lv Zheng in the eye at the end of the first half. It also criticized SIPG midfielder Cai Huikang for striking Wang Yun with his elbow and stepping on Moreno’s knee during injury time. “We urge the CSL’s disciplinary committee to review the match video and punish Sun and Cai for their actions,” said the letter, which was posted on the club’s official Weibo page.
