World champ Selby fails in UK title bid, Ding advances

WORLD champion Mark Selby suffered a shock exit from the UK Championship, while China's Ding Junhui advanced to the third round on Saturday.

Selby, who became a father for the first time earlier this month, was well short of his best as he slumped to a 4-6 second round defeat against Ireland's David Morris at the Barbican Centre in York. The victory gave world No. 62 Morris the biggest scalp of his career and he clinched it in style with a break of 79 in the 10th frame, having earlier fired in a match-best 126 to nudge closer to the winning line. Meanwhile, Ding was able to subdue crowd favorite Jimmy White, a six-time World Championship finalist, to secure a 6-2 second round victory. Ding, who won the UK title in 2005 and 2009, was joined in the last 32 by Thailand's Dechawat Poomjaeng who beat England's Michael Holt 6-3.
