Ding through despite 147 error

China’s Ding Junhui reached the second round of the world championships yesterday despite embarrassingly squandering an opportunity to record a maximum 147 break.

Trailing 3-5 to Mark Davis at Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre, Ding was on a break of 96 when he screwed back for the blue ball instead of setting himself up to pot the black.

Ding had potted 12 reds and 12 blacks to rack up the 96 points but after knocking in the 13th red he screwed back up the table to get position on the blue.

The miscalculation drew gasps from the audience, while Ding put his head in his hands, but he soon regained his composure and went on to complete a 10-7 victory.

The world No. 3 would have pocketed 30,000 pounds (US$44,700) for a maximum break, which has only been achieved 10 times in the world championships at the Crucible.

In the day’s other match, Mark Allen established a 6-3 lead over Ryan Day ahead of the resumption of play later.

On Monday, Australia’s Neil Robertson eased past Jamie Jones 10-2, having led 7-2 overnight.

The 33-year-old, world champion in 2010, will face either Ali Carter or Alan McManus in the last 16.

Barry Hawkins, the losing finalist in 2013, edged past Matthew Selt 10-9.
