Kristoffersen takes slalom crown

MARCEL Hirscher, who is virtually assured of the overall alpine skiing World Cup title, won the slalom in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, yesterday, but Henrik Kristoffersen sealed the discipline’s crystal globe.

Austrian Hirscher will win a fifth consecutive overall World Cup after Kristoffersen announced on Saturday that he would not take part in the remaining speed events.

But the Norwegian took the slalom title that Hirscher had held for three years as his second-place finish, 0.81 seconds behind Hirscher, was enough to lead by 111 points with just one race remaining.

“It’s incredible, it’s my first crystal globe!” said 21-year-old Kristoffersen after sealing a place on the podium for the 12th time this season.

It was a second slalom title for a Norwegian skier after Kjetil Andre Aamodt won it 16 years ago.

For Hirscher this was a second victory in as many days after also winning Saturday’s giant slalom, and an eighth of the season.

His route to the overall crown though was eased by a season-ending injury to closest rival Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway.

Italian Stefano Gross completed the podium yesterday.

In Jasna, Slovakia, American star Mikaela Shiffrin stormed to a dominant victory in the World Cup slalom yesterday.

It was the 20-year-old Olympic champion’s fourth win in as many slalom races this season and her 19th World Cup win overall.

Shiffrin, who claimed the last three slalom crystal globes, won by a massive 2.36 seconds over the two runs, with Switzerland’s Wendy Holdener second and home skier Veronika Velez Zuzulova third.

Despite finishing down in 10th place, Sweden’s Frida Hansdotter nevertheless ensured the World Cup slalom title.

Switzerland’s Lara Gut crashed out on the first run and will have to wait until today’s giant slalom to be able to overtake injured American Lindsey Vonn atop the overall World Cup standings.
