Youthful home team skates to glory in city
A YOUNG Chinese speedskating team grabbed a total of five medals — three of them gold — at the ISU Short Track World Cup in Shanghai over the weekend.
Wu Dajing and Fan Kexin triumphed in the men’s and women’s 500 meters, while Ren Ziwei, 18, clinched his first World Cup gold medal after winning the men’s 1,500 at Shanghai Oriental Sports Center yesterday. Qu Chenyu finished third in the women’s 500 and Tao Jiaying took silver in the women’s 1,500 on Saturday.
However, China did not perform well in both relay competitions yesterday. In the women’s 3,000 relay, Qu fell out of the track after a clash with her Canadian opponent on the fourth last lap of the race. China was given a penalty for the incident. South Korea finished first, followed by Canada and the Netherlands. South Korea has claimed all four gold medals in the event in the first four stops of the ISU Short Track World Cup.
In men’s 5,000 relay, China was leading at the halfway stage before Shi Jingnan lost balance on the curve and fell. China finished fourth while Hungary claimed the gold, followed by Italy and Canada.
“Relay is a team event, and we have always attached importance to it,” said Li Yan, head coach of the Chinese national speedskating team. “Generally, we didn’t do well this time, and the faults mean that we need to work harder in training.”
China sent a relatively young squad for this year’s event, in the 16 to 23 age group. Some of them were penalized for faults on the last two days of competitions, showing a lack of experience.
“(The faults were) because they were so eager to perform well. We should give young players more time to get used to the atmosphere on the international stage. They still have a long way to go in international competitions,” Li said.
While heaping praise on some young skaters like Ren, Li also pointed out that China needed some “iconic” skaters to lead the team. “A leader should have comprehensive abilities in both skills and mind. He or she can help form a kind of group cohesiveness and lead the team on to the right path,” she added.
