US outlasts Russia to win crown

WORLD champion Elizaveta Tuktamysheva of Russia was first in the women’s free skate yesterday but the United States held on to win the World Team Trophy in Tokyo.

Tuktamysheva landed a triple axel to finish with 134.21 points, comfortably ahead of compatriot Elena Radionova with 129.73. Japan’s Satoko Miyahara was third with 129.12.

Tuktamysheva performed the triple axel for the first time in a major competition at last month’s world championships in Shanghai, joining a handful of female skaters who have successfully landed the difficult jump.

She fell on the triple axel in the short program on Thursday but had no trouble landing a clean jump on the final day.

Ashley Wagner and Gracie Gold were fourth and fifth, respectively, as the US finished with a combined 110 points, one ahead of Russia. The Americans had a four-point lead going into the final day.

Japan finished third with 103.

Canada took fourth on 82 points with China on 77 and France 59.

Gold was first after the short program but struggled yesterday. She fell on her opening triple lutz and was deducted points on a triple flip.

“It was so much more stressful watching than actually skating,” said American team captain Evan Bates. “Especially when the ladies were skating — they were some of the most nerve-wracking moments I can remember.”

“To have our fate tied together like that is the essence of this event and it’s wonderful,” he added.

The US also won this event in 2013 and 2009. Japan won in 2012.

Earlier, world champions Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford of Canada somewhat controversially won the pairs free skate, edging out China’s Sui Wenjing and Han Cong in a repeat of their victory in Shanghai.

Duhamel and Radford earned 140.70 points to 139.73 for Sui and Han, despite Duhamel falling on a quad throw and crash-landing a triple toeloop.

American sweethearts Alexa Scimeca and Chris Knierim took third with a career-best 127.87.
