Richardson-Bergsma sets 1,000-meter world record
HEATHER Richardson-Bergsma clocked a world-record 1 minute, 12.51 seconds on Saturday to win the women’s 1,000 meters at the speed skating World Cup in Calgary, Canada.
Richardson-Bergsma’s effort on the 1988 Olympic Oval came shortly after US compatriot Brittany Bowe had set a world record of 1:12.54. Bowe, winner of the 1,000, 1,500 and sprint world titles in 2015, had improved her own previous world record of 1:12.58, set in November of 2013 in Salt Lake City. But she settled for silver, behind Richardson-Bergsma, with China’s Zhang Hong third in a Chinese record of 1:12.65.
