O’Mahony’s RWC over but Irish hopeful on Sexton

BREAKFAST was somber for Ireland as teammates consoled flanker Peter O’Mahony before he left their camp yesterday because his knee ligament injury ruled him out of the rest of the Rugby World Cup.

“Everyone was gutted to see him go,” fullback Rob Kearney said.

O’Mahony was hurt and carried off in the 24-9 win over France in Cardiff on Sunday and Rhys Ruddock, the Leinster backrower who was initially left out of the RWC with an injured arm, has been drafted into the squad to replace him.

O’Mahony was one of three key players injured in the match.

Ireland coach Joe Schmidt said that he suspected captain Paul O’Connell had played his last international after injuring his hamstring but the Six Nations champion is more upbeat on flyhalf Johnny Sexton’s damaged groin.

“Paul is in hospital awaiting a scan. Johnny suffered a groin injury and is awaiting a scan but we’re hopeful,” the IRFU said on Twitter.

Ireland, which avoided any serious injuries before center Jared Payne was sent home with a fractured foot last Saturday, lost O’Mahony in the second half of the hugely physical test when his foot stuck in the grass and he twisted his knee.

Schmidt, who was initially hopeful that the injury looked the least serious of the three, could face further backrow problems for the quarterfinal against Argentina if Sean O’Brien is cited for striking France’s Pascal Pape in the stomach.

Meanwhile, Ross Ford and Jonny Gray are in danger of missing Scotland’s World Cup quarterfinal against Australia after both were cited yesterday.

First choice hooker Ford and lock Gray, who forms an effective partnership with older brother Richie, have been cited for a lifting tackle during Scotland’s thrilling 36-33 win over Samoa on Saturday.

Their hearing will take place in London today.

Australia will have breathed a sigh of relief as star No 8 David Pocock escaped a citing for an incident during its epic 15-6 win over Wales on Saturday.
