Gatland is Lions coach

WARREN Gatland has been confirmed as the British and Irish Lions coach, who will take the best of the Home Nations’ rugby players to his New Zealand homeland next year.

The announcement came yesterday, a day after photos emerged of him wearing a Lions jersey in an outdoor photo shoot in Edinburgh. The Lions face 10 matches next June, including three tests against the All Blacks, and all five Super Rugby sides. This will be the 12th Lions tour of New Zealand, where they have won only one series, in 1971. Adding to the depth of the Lions’ challenge, the All Blacks are the two-time defending world champions who haven’t lost at home since 2009. Gatland, 52, will relinquish his duties with Wales for a year before resuming the job he has done since 2007. “It’s probably the biggest job in world rugby against the best opposition in world rugby,” Gatland said after being unveiled in Edinburgh.
