Tavares scores overtime winner

JOHN Tavares forced overtime with his first goal and clinched victory in the extra period with his second to give the New York Islanders a 3-2 win at New Jersey on Friday.

The victory moved the Islanders a point ahead of Pittsburgh in the Metropolitan and stayed within three points of Eastern Conference leader Tampa Bay, which had a tight win over Buffalo.

Tavares scored moments after a power play expired to tie the game 2-2, then in overtime, he took the puck from a fallen opponent behind the net, turned and roared into the right circle and snapped a shot over the shoulder of the goaltender.

Josh Bailey got New York’s other goal, which beat the Devils for the third time in as many games this season.

Scott Gomez and Travis Zajac scored for New Jersey.

Florida’s Thomas Fleischmann scored with 3:09 left in the third period to lead the Panthers to a thrilling 6-5 win over Calgary.

Tampa Bay’s Steven Stamkos scored his 22nd goal of the season to break a third-period tie and give the Lightning a 2-1 win against Buffalo.

Toronto’s James van Riemsdyk scored twice and added an assist, helping the Maple Leafs defeat Columbus 5-2.

Edmonton’s Derek Roy had a goal and two assists to lift the struggling Oilers to a 5-2 victory over Chicago.
