Flyers score 7 as Lightning routed
PHILADELPHIA had five individual scorers in the second period as the Flyers crushed NHL Eastern Conference leader Tampa Bay Lightning 7-3 on Monday.
In the day’s other results, Washington defeated Colorado, and Los Angeles scored in the opening minute en route to a victory over Toronto.
Jake Voracek, Pierre-Edouard Bellemare, Mark Streit and Brayden Schenn all scored in a 6-minute, 52-second span in the second period as the Flyers matched a season high in goals. Michael Raffl also scored in the second period.
Voracek boosted his NHL-best point total to 52. Claude Giroux, on his birthday, had two assists to give him 34 this season, matching his teammate for the league lead.
Even with the All-Star duo enjoying sensational seasons, the Flyers entered the game 14th in the Eastern Conference.
Philadelphia goaltender Rob Zepp won his second career game in place of injured Steve Mason, who is expected to miss two weeks because of a lower-body injury.
Washington’s Alex Ovechkin scored a tiebreaking power-play goal late in the second period to help the Capitals beat Colorado 2-1.
Ovechkin snapped a shot from the left circle for his 74th game-winning goal, moving him past Peter Bondra for first place in franchise history. Ovechkin also now has scored in six of his past seven games. Jay Beagle also scored for the Capitals.
Alex Tanguay scored for the Avalanche.
Los Angeles goalie Martin Jones made 19 saves in his seventh career shutout, and Anze Kopitar scored in the opening minute as the Kings beat Toronto 2-0.
