Moon lands halfway lead

DEFENDING champion Moon Kyong-jun shot a 4-under-par 68 yesterday to seize the halfway lead at the GS Caltex Maekyung Open in Seoul.
Moon, whose victory last year was the first of his career, led by two strokes at the OneAsia event after the second round, with a 9-under 135 total at Namseoul Country Club.
Korean compatriot Park Sang-hyun fired a 70 for 137.
Australian Michael Sim is in solo possession of third place after coming in with a 69, while South Korea’s Lee Soo-min carded 69 to lie fourth.
Five off the lead were South Koreans Kim Bio (71) and Kim Hyung-sung (73) along with compatriot Kim Kyung-tae (69), who last weekend beat Japan’s Daisuke Kataoka in a playoff at The Crowns for his sixth title since winning the Thailand Open last June.
In Charlotte, North Carolina, Anirban Lahiri, who felt he was overdue for a low score, shot a 66 to trail American co-leaders Steve Wheatcroft and Andrew Loupe by a stroke after the first round of the Wells Fargo Championship.
On a cool and breezy day when defending champion Rory McIlroy battled for a 73, India’s Lahiri enjoyed a flawless six-birdie performance on a damp Quail Hollow course on Thursday.
“Anytime you have a bogey-free card, it’s fantastic,” said Lahiri, who played in slightly tougher morning conditions. “I’ve played mediocre or average golf the last few months. I definitely feel like I should be competing more consistently.”
Lahiri, ranked 55th in the world and playing in his first full season on the PGA Tour, is the top-ranked Indian and excited at the prospect of representing his country at the August 5-21 Rio Olympics.
The Olympics is the last thing on the mind of Loupe and Wheatcroft, both non-winners on tour, who took different routes to carding a 7-under 65 in the afternoon.
