China donates US$1m to WADA

CHINA has donated US$1 million to a World Anti-Doping Agency fund for research and development of techniques to detect prohibited substances. WADA said on Thursday that the vice premier of the State Council for China, Liu Yandong, become the first national government leader to commit support.

In December 2013, International Olympic President Thomas Bach announced that the organization would invest US$10 million to fund innovative athlete-centered anti-doping research, including new techniques for the detection of prohibited substances and methods, and called on governments to match the amount.

WADA President Craig Reedie later encouraged countries to make individual commitments before November 16 which would raise the total research fund for the joint IOC-WADA initiative to US$20 million.
