North Korea’s Kim claims historic gold
NORTH Korean teen Kim Kuk Hyang made history on Thursday with her country’s first diving gold medal at the swimming world championships with a shock victory in the women’s 10-meter platform final.
The 16-year-old produced a stunning final dive, earning two perfect 10 scores from the seven judges, for a total of 397.05 points leaving 14-year-old Chinese diver Ren Qian to take silver with 388 points.
“I would like to appreciate our government and our nation for their great support,” Kim said through a translator.
Malaysia’s Pandelela Rinong Anak Pamg finished with 385.05 to claim the bronze medal.
China’s Si Yajie, the defending champion, finished fourth after a poor final dive cost her another medal after she won gold in the mixed 10m platform final last Saturday.
Kim’s victory means China’s stranglehold on major diving competitions seems to be weakening, although it has still claimed golds in six of the nine events so far in Kazan, Russia, with four finals still to come.
North Korea had never won a medal at any worlds until this month, and now has two, both in diving. Kim Un Hyang and Song Nam Hyang won the first on Monday, a bronze in the women’s synchro 10m platform.
