China adds to its medal haul with 2 more golds

CHINA continued to dominate the pool at the FINA Diving World Cup yesterday, scooping two more gold medals to take its tally to five at the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center.

Olympic champion Chen Ruolin partnered 17-year-old Liu Huixia to win the women’s 10m synchro platform final. The duo, who topped the qualifying round in the morning, led the pack in the finals from the very first round.

Their last and fifth attempt won them the highest point of 85.44 for a gold medal total of 357.66 points — a good 21 point advantage over the second placed Malaysian pair.

“We did a perfect job today,” Chen said. “But there is still room for improvement.”

Malaysian silver medalists Cheong Jun Hoong and Leong Mun Yee were also happy with the result, especially since they started training together few days before coming to Shanghai.

The bronze medal went to the Canadian pair of Meaghan Benfeito and Roseline Filion.

Also, China’s Lin Yue and Cai Yuan won the men’s 3m synchro springboard late yesterday. Their final score of 461.31 points was good enough to beat the German pair of Stephan Feck and Patrick Hausding by 30 points.

The bronze medal went to the Russian pair of Evgeni Kuznetsov and Ilia Zakharov.

Meanwhile, a decision to add the mixed diving event to the World Aquatic Championships in Kazan, Russia, next year will be taken when FINA meets in Doha at the end of the year, Cornel Marculescu, executive director of FINA, said.

China’s Chen Aisen and Huang Xiaohui won the first mixed diving gold in Shanghai on Tuesday.

A male and a female diver will make six attempts from the 3m springboard and 10m platform. The eventual champions will be decided from the total points accumulated. Male divers have strength and explosive power to their advantage while female divers are usually better in flexibility.

“Apart from the fierce competition, an event should also be pleasant to watch,” Marculescu said, adding that FINA was working to make the events more attractive to the spectators.

High diving was introduced at last year’s World Championships in Barcelona. The extreme sport, sometimes referred to as cliff diving, has amazed spectators and TV audiences around the world.

FINA will hold the first-ever High Diving World Cup in Kazan from August 8 to 10.
