Ma replaces Wang as Sharks head coach
THE Shanghai Sharks unveiled former Sichuan boss Ma Yuenan as their new head coach for the 2014 Chinese Basketball Association season yesterday.
Ma, a veteran coach who once led the Chinese women’s youth team to Asian championship glory, will take over from Wang Qun. Ma has also coached CBA and youth teams in Shaanxi and Guangdong provinces, and was appointed head coach of CBA side Sichuan Whales in the middle of last season.
Meanwhile, Zhang Mingji has been removed as the Sharks general manager and replaced by former deputy manager Zhang Peizhong. The Sharks said the change was only an “internal switch” with their managing team members rearranging their duties. Chinese Taipei’s Yang Chin-ming, who played for the Xinjiang Flying Tigers last season, will also join the Sharks this year.
The Sharks finished eighth in the 18-team CBA regular season last year. They were ousted 0-3 by the Guangdong Southern Tigers in the playoffs’ first round. The Beijing Ducks won the title, beating Xinjiang 4-2 in the finals.
