Bellinger hits for cycle as Dodgers thump Marlins

CODY Bellinger became the first rookie to hit for the cycle in Los Angeles Dodgers history in a 7-1 Major League Baseball win over the Marlins in Miami, Florida, on Saturday.

Bellinger is just the ninth Dodger to accomplish the feat — hitting a single, double, triple and home run in one game — in the club’s 128-year history which dates back to their time in Brooklyn, New York.

The last Dodger to do so was Orlando Hudson on April 13, 2009.

Bellinger said the cycle was his first at any level.

“In this organization there is so much history,” he said. “To see my name on some of that is pretty humbling.”

Bellinger, who turned 22 last Thursday, singled in the first inning, belted a two-run homer in the third, slugged a run-scoring double in the fourth and got his triple on a line drive to right field in the seventh.

The four hits are a career high for Bellinger, who finished 4-for-5 with three runs-batted-in and two runs scored.

His homer was his 26th of the season, and it sparked a five-run third in which all the scoring was done with two outs.

Los Angeles pitcher Alex Wood, a first-time All-Star this year, is now 11-0 on the season and improved his earned run average to 1.56.

He allowed just three hits and one walk in six scoreless innings with four strikeouts.

The Dodgers have the best record in the major leagues, winning 28 of their past 32 games.

“I just don’t see anyone compete as much as we do,” manager Dave Roberts said. “Our club for 27 outs competes harder than anyone. When you have the talent we have and compete the way we do every single night, we’re going to win a lot of games.”
