Shanghai to host first AFL in-season match next May

THE Australian Football League is bringing an in-season match to China for the first time with Port Adelaide taking on Gold Coast Suns at Jiangwan Stadium in Shanghai’s Yangpu District, on May 14, 2017.

Port Adelaide Football Club chief executive officer Keith Thomas believes the chance to stage an official, in-season game in China is not only vital to the success of Australia’s national game, but also in strengthening the bilateral relations through sports diplomacy. “Our fans have already showed a significant interest in our game next year, either to travel to watch the game in China or to gain a greater understanding of China and its relationship with Australia,” Thomas told a press conference in Shanghai yesterday. Port Adelaide has a long-term strategy to develop relationships in China. It signed an agreement with CCTV this year to broadcast AFL games in China each week. The club also recruited Chinese national player Chen Shaoliang for the 2016 and 2017 seasons, aiming at draw more fans from Chinese communities in Australia. Founded in 1870, Port Adelaide is South Australia’s oldest football club, having won 36 state league titles and the AFL premiership in 2004.
