Redskins put Eagles on brink; Bolt rally to victory

THE Philadelphia Eagles are on the brink of elimination from the playoffs race after a 24-27 loss to the Washington Redskins on Saturday.

Mark Sanchez’s interception with 1:31 remaining led to Kai Forbath’s winning 26-yard field goal with 5 seconds left as the Redskins (4-11) broke a six-game losing streak.

The Eagles lost their third in a row to fall to 9-6 and now need the Dallas Cowboys to lose its final two games — against the Indianapolis Colts today and the Redskins next week — to have a shot at repeating as NFC East champions.

In Landover, Maryland, Sanchez completed 37 of 50 passes for 374 yards with two touchdowns to Riley Cooper. He lost his third fumble this season and threw his 10th interception — Redskins rookie cornerback Bashaud Breeland had the big play — to put the Eagles’ NFL-leading turnover tally at 36.

Robert Griffin III, back from his recent benching after a season-ending neck injury to Colt McCoy, completed 16 of 23 passes for 220 yards with one interception for the Redskins to win in his first complete game in more than a year.

Redskins’ DeSean Jackson, cut by the Eagles after last season, caught four passes for 126 yards for a second big game against his former team.

Philadelphia’s loss clinched a playoff berth for the Detroit Lions. The Eagles were eliminated from the wildcard race.

In the other National Football League game, Nick Novak kicked a 40-yard field goal nearly 5 minutes into overtime after Philip Rivers rallied San Diego back from a 21-point deficit in the second half, keeping the Chargers’ slim playoff hopes alive with a 38-35 win over the San Francisco 49ers in Santa Clara, California.

Rivers threw a tying 11-yard touchdown pass to Malcom Floyd with 29 seconds left in regulation after completing a pair of fourth-and-longs as the Chargers forced overtime.

Phil Dawson’s 60-yard field goal attempt for San Francisco as regulation ended fell way short. Quinton Patton fumbled in OT to set up San Diego’s winning drive. Rivers converted fourth-and-8 and fourth-and-10 on the key final San Diego drive of the fourth quarter.

The 49ers blew just their second game when leading by 21 or more at halftime. They lost 41-42 to the Minnesota Vikings on October 24, 1965, after leading 35-14 at halftime.
