Shiffrin, Fenninger share WCup victory in GS opener
AMERICAN skier Mikaela Shiffrin and Austrian rival Anna Fenninger tied for victory in the first World Cup giant slalom of the season yesterday.
They both finished with a combined time for the two legs in Soelden, Austria, of 2 minutes, 39.85 seconds after Shiffrin had led after the first leg by the slender margin of 0.09 seconds. A second Austrian skier, Eva Maria Brem, was third in a time of 2:40.12.
Shiffrin took full advantage of being first down the slope on the first leg for a time of 1:17.92, but Fenninger made up the difference by finishing fastest over the second. France’s world champion Tessa Worley, returning from injury, could only manage seventh, in 2:41.42, having been third after the first run.
