Shenhua appoints Gustavo Poyet its new head coach

SHANGHAI Greenland Shenhua named Uruguayan Gustavo Poyet its new head coach on Tuesday, who will lead the Chinese Super League side in the new season, as well as in the Asian Champions League next year.

The 48-year-old had coaching experiences in Brighton & Hove Albion, Sunderland and AEK Athens. He signed a two-year deal with La Liga side Real Betis last May, but was replaced by Victor Sanchez earlier this month. As a player, he also had remarkable performances in clubs like Real Zaragoza, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur.

Just 18 days after his dismissal, the former Uruguay national team midfielder is starting a new career in the big-spending CSL. He brought a four-member assisting team with him – Italian assistant coach Mauricio Tarico, Greece fitness coach Panagiotis Voulgaris, British technical analyst Charlie Oatway and goalie coach Andy Beasley.

They arrived in Shanghai on Tuesday morning and toured around his new club’s training camp in Pudong’s Kangqiao. The team is heading to Haikou, Hainan Province, on Friday for pre-season trainings.

Greenland Shenhua had been searching for a “suitable but not necessarily famous” manager since it ended the contract with Spaniard Gregorio Manzano after a fourth-place finish in the 2016 CSL season. It had earlier contacted other candidates including Western Sydney Wanderers coach Tony Popovic before making the new appointment.
