Shanghai Amateur Games Taekwondo League kicks off

THE 2017 Shanghai Amateur Games Taekwondo League, which kicked off at Hongkou Gymnasium over the weekend, will hold 27 different categories of competitions this year. Around 30,000 families are participating in various competitions.

The league will use some new technology this year. The organizers said that electronic sandbags will be used so that the speed and strength of the athletes’ motions can be correctly detected.

Taekwondo athletes from China and South Korea performed at the opening ceremony, which was attended by Chinese Taekwondo Association vice president Dong Jun and deputy director of Shanghai Sports Bureau Zhao Guangsheng.

Taekwondo was introduced into China in the 1990s. The league aims to promote the sport around the city.
