Plenty of action in city for 2015
SHANGHAI will host around 60 international sports events as well as more than 70 national-level competitions this year, the city’s sports bureau announced yesterday.
Three new international events have been added to this year’s agenda, namely the 2015 FINA Women’s Water Polo World League Super Final from June 9 to 14; a sailing competition on the Huangpu River scheduled for July, as well as the Blackpool (China) International Standard Dance competition on August 21-23 at Shanghai Grand Stage.
Other well-known international sports events to be held in the city include: the 2015 Formula One Chinese Grand Prix (April 10-12); World Extreme Games (April 28 to May 3); Global Champions Tour (equestrian, May 8-10); 2015 IAAF Diamond League (May 17); 2015 world snooker Shanghai Masters (September 21-27); ATP 1000 Shanghai Masters (October 12-20); NBA China Game (October 14); golf’s HSBC Champions (November 2-8); 2015 Shanghai International Marathon (November 8); and the Short Track Speedskating World Cup in December.
The first international sports event for Shanghai in China’s Year of the Sheep will be the 2015 ISU World Figure Skating Championships to be staged at Shanghai Oriental Sports Center on March 23-29.
The first two days will be official training, with the competition to be held on 25-28; March 29 features skating performances. More details were provided yesterday about the event’s opening ceremony on March 25.
With the theme of “ice & affinity”, the opening ceremony will feature a projective show on ice as well as performances from Russian world champion Evgeni Plushenko, American Olympic gold medalists Meryl Davis and Charlie White, as well as China’s retired world and Olympic champions Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo, the couple, who as ambassadors of the event, will not only skate but also sing.
China is sending a squad of 11 athletes — two for men’s, one for women’s, one pair for ice dance and three pairs for pair skating. The 2010 Vancouver Olympics silver medalists Pang Qing and Tong Jian, currently being coached by Zhao, will be competing for the Shanghai championships, the first one to be held in China.
“Ticket sales so far have been to our expectations,” said Huang Yongping, chief of the Shanghai Sports Bureau. “Shanghai people have a great interest in sports. The city doesn’t see much snow and ice every year, but the residents are no strangers to winter sports.”
According to Huang, Shanghai has more than 170 registered curling athletes, as well as over 230 registered ice hockey players and 70-plus figure skaters. About 100 retired national-level athletes are coaching in five local ice sport clubs which boast 11 ice venues
Huang hopes the Shanghai event will serve as a boost for China’s bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympic Games with Beijing as a top-choice candidate .
