Fake drug in 2 Jiangsu deaths?

A HOSPITAL in Jiangsu Province is investigating whether the death of two patients was caused by a fake drug made by a Heilongjiang Province drugmaker, a newspaper reported yesterday.

The two men were injected with Armillarisin A made by the Qiqihar No. 2 Pharmaceutical Co Ltd, said the Modern Express.

Wang Xiyong, 27, died on May 4, the report said, citing Chen Bangtong, an official with the medical center in Suqian City.

The villager was hospitalized at the facility on March 23 after he was diagnosed with hepatitis. Doctors administered 55 ampoules of Armillarisin A, or five ampoules per day, before he was discharged in early April, according to the report.

Wang continued taking the drug, at four ampoules a day, at his home for several days.

The hospital instructed him to take five ampoules a day. Li Jinzhong, a village clinic doctor, reduced the number of injections to four. He believed five was too many. "Too much drip isn't good for anyone," Li said.

On April 12, Wang developed fever and nausea and was rushed to the hospital again. Doctors said he developed kidney failure.

After giving him Armillarisin A for two more days, the hospital began dialysis.

On April 25, the family gave up medical treatment for lack of money.

Besides Wang, another patient, Wang Liguang, also died.

The hospital said it bought 10,000 ampoules of the tainted drug on January 16. It had used 7,500 before China banned it in mid-May. More than 200 patients used the medicine, Chen said.

In March, the drugmaker incorporated industrial grade diethylene glycol into 72,500 ampoules of Armillarisin A, which has killed nine people in Guangdong Province.

The company obtained 1 ton of the hazardous ingredient from Wang Guiping, a Jiangsu farmer, who has been detained by police.
