Victim of fake medicine dying

TWO of the victims of fake medicine made by a Heilongjiang Province drugmaker are now in a coma and one was dying, a hospital in Guangdong Province said yesterday.

Both are on respiratory machines as their lungs were seriously infected, according to Zhao Zhixin, a doctor at the Infectious Disease Department of No. 3 Hospital Affiliated to Sun Yat-sen University in the provincial capital Guangzhou.

One might die "as early as today," Zhao said yesterday.

A third victim who underwent a liver-kidney transplant to control complications from a kidney failure last Thursday has regained consciousness and is recovering, Zhao said.

The hospital has confirmed that 64 patients used the fake drug produced by Qiqihar No. 2 Pharmaceutical Co Ltd. At least 11 developed kidney failure after using the drug. Nine have died.

Tomorrow, experts are expected to check more than 100 people who believe they used the fake Armillarisin A Injection when seeking medical attention at the hospital.

In another case, authorities in Zhejiang Province are charging a man with selling 19 kinds of medication made from flour and toxic chemicals.
