Drugmaker license suspended

AUTHORITIES suspended the production license of a Heilongjiang Province drugmaker that produced five fake medications, including a tainted drug linked to five deaths and severe medical complications in six others.

Guangdong Province police have taken five executives of the Qiqihar No. 2 Pharmaceutical Co Ltd in Qiqihar to Guangzhou, where the deaths were reported, for investigation.

The drugmaker had been making injectable Armillarisin A for many years before it obtained a license for producing the drug last September.

Also in September, it bought 1 ton of a chemical falsely labeled as propylene glycol.

The chemical it bought was actually diethylene glycol, used for industrial purposes. It can cause kidney failure.

The company produced 72,145 ampoules of Armillarisin A with the hazardous ingredient on March 5. It sold 6,000 tainted drug in Guangdong and 600 in Shanxi Province from late March through April.
