A HAILSTORM-PACKED tornado swept across 17 villages in Lianjiang City, southern Guangdong Province, on Thursday morning, toppling more than 480 houses and damaging 120 hectares of crops, with some 10,000 villagers affected. No casualties were reported. Local officials put the direct economic loss from the 20-minute storm at about 12.8 million yuan (US$1.54 million).
