10 years for cash, gold, ivory graft
原上海松江区副区长受审

THE former deputy director of Songjiang District has been jailed for 10 years for taking bribes worth 1.91 million yuan (US$307,500) in cash, gold and ivory.

Wang Jun sought profits for others on jobs, projects, banking and deposit-taking services, the Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People’s Court heard.

Wang was appointed deputy director of Xuhui District tourism office in 1992, later becoming director.

In 2006, he became deputy director of Songjiang District and during his tenure took bribes including ivory products, gold and cash, the court heard.

Wang was charged in January and subsequently stood trial.

But because Wang’s lawyer queried the value of ivory objects, Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People’s Court asked a judicial institution to reappraise these figures.

In addition to the jail sentence, Wang had assets worth 500,000 yuan seized and all the illicit items confiscated.

Wang said he would not appeal.
