Wrongful execution officer jailed

A FORMER senior policeman in China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, who led an investigation that resulted in a teenager being executed for a murder he did not commit, was yesterday sentenced to 18 years in prison on charges of corruption and illegal possession of guns.

In 2014, a court posthumously acquitted Huugjilt after he had been executed for raping and killing a woman in a public restroom, a miscarriage of justice which sparked widespread public anger in China.

Another man was later sentenced to death for the crime.

In February, 27 people were penalized in connection with the wrongful conviction case, most of them receiving administrative punishments.

However, Feng Zhiming, former deputy head of police in Hohhot, the capital city of Inner Mongolia, and head of the investigation that led to Huugjilt’s execution, was later criminally charged.

A court in the Inner Mongolian city of Hulunbuir found Feng guilty of taking 3.89 million yuan (US$584,800) in bribes, engaging in real estate speculation and illegally possessing four guns and 549 bullets. He was also unable to account for another 34.4 million yuan in his possession.
