2 jailed in separate graft cases

A FORMER senior Party official in central China’s Henan Province has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for taking bribes.

Wu Tianjun, a former member of the standing committee of the Henan Provincial Committee, took advantage of his positions to help others with business operations and promotions, according to Xiangyang Intermediate People’s Court in neighboring Hubei Province.

He accepted money and valuables worth more than 11 million yuan (US$1.6 million) either personally or through others between 2004 and 2015.

Wu had also served as head of the commission for political and legal affairs of the Henan committee as well as chief of Party committees in the cities of Xinxiang and Zhengzhou.

Wu had confessed his crimes and returned his illegal gains willingly, all grounds for leniency, according to the court.

In a separate case, Yao Zhongmin, former chairman of the board of supervisors at China Development Bank, was sentenced to 14 years in prison for accepting bribes.

Yao was also fined 3.5 million yuan when he appeared at Baoding Intermediate People’s Court in north China’s Hebei Province.

Yao had also served as deputy chief of the bank’s Party committee and its vice president.

Yao took advantage of his positions to secure loans and projects for others, and accepted money and valuables worth nearly 36.2 million yuan either personally or through others, including his brother, the court said.

It was noted that Yao had confessed his crimes and returned his profits willingly, all grounds for leniency.
