Woman ‘killed mother in row over money’

A 39-year-old woman accused of fatally poisoning her mother with mercury after she turned down her request for money appeared in a Beijing court yesterday to face charges of theft and murder, The Beijing News said.

According to prosecutors, her neighbors called the police two months after the murder occurred because a terrible odor began to emanate from the house due to the decomposition of the corpse.

The suspect, Yang Kun, stole over 2,000 yuan (US$300) in cash and withdrew more than 9,600 yuan using her 61-year-old mother’s bank cards after she killed her, prosecutors claimed.

Yang was living with her mother, surnamed Liu, and her 7-year-old daughter. After two divorces, the jobless suspect often asked her mother for money and quarreled with her.

In January 2014, Yang asked Liu for money once again, but she refused.

Enraged, Yang allegedly tied Liu up, despite her daughter’s efforts to stop her.

Later, Yang poured the mercury from two thermometers into Liu’s mouth, killing her, Beijing Second Intermediate People’s Court heard.

Without enough money to go anywhere, Yang and her daughter continued to live in the apartment with the corpse and tried to cover up the odor with deodorant spray.

Yang’s daughter is now being cared for at a welfare center.

The trial continues.
