Taiwan suspect ‘in good condition’

TAIWAN resident Lee Ming-che, who is being investigated for endangering national security, is “in good physical condition,” Ma Xiaoguang, a spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said yesterday.

“Lee’s medical needs have been taken care of,” Ma said. “He has also written a letter explaining the situation clearly to his family.”

Ma added: “The suspect’s legal rights are being protected during the investigation.”

Ma said the mainland had always encouraged exchanges across the Taiwan Strait. “Taiwan compatriots’ rights will be protected in accordance with law as long as they are engaged in normal activities in the mainland,” he said.

Ma also confirmed that a mainland citizen, who left his group when traveling in Taiwan earlier this month, had returned to Xiamen.

“The mainland-based Association for Tourism Exchange Across the Taiwan Strait required Taiwan’s related authority to send him back in accordance with the cross-Strait tourism agreement,” Ma said. “The related mainland tourism authority and travel agency have conducted inquiries and investigations on the tourist and tour group leader.”

Ma said authorities would deal with the incident in accordance with regulations.

Meanwhile, he urged mainland tourists to observe a revised regulation on travel in Taiwan, which was made public on April 13.
