‘Romeo’ makes 999 roses, each from two 100-yuan notes, in marriage bid

IT took 1,998 banknotes of 100 yuan (US$16), but a Romeo in Hangzhou in Zhejiang Province was determined to win his girlfriend’s hand in marriage by offering her 999 roses — each folded from two of the red-colored bills.

It was a calculated move after the woman’s mother had discouraged the man, surnamed Chen, since he didn’t have an apartment or a car.

Chen saved the money, nearly 200,000 yuan, from his salary for five years. Each rose took him five to six minutes to fold.

When Chen visited her girlfriend’s home during the Chinese New Year and expressed his desire to marry the woman, her mother expressed her worries about the pair. The girl’s mother said: “Renting an apartment is acceptable before marriage while marriage without a home isn’t quite appropriate.”

So Chen began making the paper roses on Saturday, folding them after dinner until 2 o’clock in the morning every day. He asked his friends and colleagues for help in order to send all of the roses to his girlfriend yesterday, which was her birthday.

She said yes.
