No complaints about noise of these dancers

SQUARE dancing, an activity beloved by older Chinese, often causes disputes because of the loud music.

But recently a video went viral which showed a group of elderly people dancing while wearing earphones.

Every day at 7:30am, more than 100 dancers wearing wireless earphones gather at the Guanyinqiao district of southwest China’s Chongqing.

The earphones are provided free by the district management committee.

“Nearby residents used to complain about the annoying noise of loudspeakers. Although silent dancing is weird, dancing with earphones has a win-win effect,” said a dancer surnamed Cheng.

Cheng is among China’s more than 220 million elderly, a group the government predicts will account for about a quarter of the population by 2030.

Square dancing, group dancing in public squares, is popular as exercise due to its low cost and ease of participation.

However, owing to insufficient space and poor management, there have been a string of conflicts.

In a recent case in central China’s Henan Province, dancers in Luoyang came to blows with basketball players over the use of a basketball court in a park.
