Man pays big price for practical jokes as friends ignore his distress

A PRACTICAL joker who often pretended to be drowning apparently really did drown last week when his friends ignored his attempts to get help after they went swimming in Evergreen Lake in Guangzhou Province, Southern Daily reported.

Police and rescue teams failed to find the man after he disappeared last Wednesday.

The man, surnamed Zhang, in his early 30s, waved his hands in distress, but they thought he was kidding again, they said. They said they regretted not taking him seriously.

Police and rescue team arrived after Zhang's friends failed to find him and called authorities. Some citizens nearby participated in the rescue, too. They decided to end the search after two hours, with Zhang still missing, because it had grown dark.

Police warn residents not to swim in the lake, which has been the scene of several drowning accidents.
