Man mauled by tiger had jumped into enclosure to escape admission fee

THE man who was mauled to death by a tiger yesterday actually jumped into its enclosure by himself to avoid paying entry fee to the zoo, local administration said today.

The dead man surnamed Zhang, from Hubei Province, was among a group of six who visited Ningbo Youngor Zoo in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, at 2pm yesterday, according to fellow traveler surnamed Li.

Li said Zhang’s wife and two children, and Li’s wife paid for the visit. While Zhang and Li climbed over the three-meter-high fence of the range near the west gate of the zoo, according to the Dongqian Lake Tourist and Holiday Resort Administrative Committee that administers the zoo.

Li said there was a warning sign but they ignored it. Zhang leaped into the tiger enclosure but Li didn’t. A further investigation is still under way.

The administration said the zoo was closed today, and a city-wide safety check on tourist spots has started.

Online video showed a tiger was gnawing Zhang, and two other tigers were watching. Witness said the zookeepers had tried to disperse the tigers with firecracker, but the tiger didn’t leave him, and it was shot to death, according to the People’s Daily.
