Man charged with attempted rape after drugging hitchhiker during meal and taking her to hotel

A man will be charged with attempted rape after he allegedly drugged a woman he had just met during a hitch-hiking ride and tried to force her into a hotel room in May, Baoshan District prosecutors said today.

The woman had struggled to text her relative, who finally saved her at the hotel entrance, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors said the woman, whom they did not identify, fell into the trap after bumping into the suspect, who was also not named, on Momo, a popular social-networking app in May. The man had posted a hitch-hiking offer for his trip back to Shanghai on Momo and the woman responded and followed him as a friend on the app.

When the car arrived in town, the woman accepted to the suspect's invitation to have a late-night snack together. They went into a crawfish restaurant in Baoshan District.

The man took out a capsule and mixed it with the victim's drink when she left to answer a phone call outside the store. She started feeling weak, dizzy and had blurred vision after she returned and had the drink.

The man offered to drive her home and instead, he took her to a hotel. The victim alleged she was sexually harassed on the car and she managed to text her relative about her situation. The relative later found the woman in time at the hotel entrance and alarmed police.

The suspect allegedly claimed both of them suffered food poisoning eating the crawfish but police visited the store and the security footage unveiled the truth. Police recovered remains of the capsule under the table and found sedative clonazepam inside.
