Inaction, indolence, incompetence ‘must be punished’

GOVERNMENT officials must be held responsible for any inaction, incompetence or indolence, Premier Li Keqiang said yesterday.

Officials found to be irresponsible and careless in exercising their power must be punished, he said, and they must not be allowed to be inactive or incompetent.

Li noted that some government officials had made administrative procedures easier for the public, but at the same time were unwilling to actively solve people’s problems.

“They are inactive and must be held accountable seriously,” he said.

He stressed the rule of law in fighting against corruption, with everyone being equal before the law. No one should be allowed to exercise power outside the jurisdiction of law, he said.

Efforts to streamline administrative approvals and delegate powers would be stepped up to eliminate a breeding ground for corruption, he said, noting that seeking payment was common among many corrupt officials.

Government officials must enhance their sense of discipline, using power for public good rather than private gains, he said.
