Drone provides the ring as rock star proposes to actress girlfriend

A DRONE carrying a diamond engagement ring was the surprise guest at a birthday party organized by Chinese rock star Wang Feng for his girlfriend, Zhang Ziyi, star of “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” and “Memoirs of a Geisha.”

Online reports said Wang, 44, then got down on one knee and offered Zhang the ring, saying: “We have experienced sweet times and bitter times, and I wish you great happiness. I hope that I have the chance to take care of you when we both get old.”

A tearful Zhang accepted his proposal.

Wang also gave Zhang a ruby bracelet as a birthday present. The Chinese actress is 36 today.

Online reports put the value of the ring, from British jeweler Moussaieff, at anything from 30 million (US$4.8 million) to 100 million yuan. They also put the cost of Saturday night’s party in Beijing, themed on the year of the sheep, Zhang’s Chinese zodiac sign, at more than a million yuan.

Yesterday morning, Xitubudui’s Weibo account, widely believed to be Zhang’s, posted a picture of fireworks with the words “I do.”

Wang later retweeted the post and replied: “Thank you for completing my life.”

Both posts were retweeted over 50,000 times and had attracted around 60,000 comments by yesterday. Most wished the couple well while others mentioned both partner’s complicated romantic entanglements.

Wang has been married twice and has two daughters. He announced his divorce from his second wife in 2013, shortly after he met Zhang.

According to media reports, Wang first met Zhang’s parents at a casino in Macau, helping them to win a large sum of money. Then Zhang met Wang at a party where she thanked him for his help. Since then, he has often been a guest at the family home.

Spotted at concert

The pair were spotted at a concert by pop star Eason Chan in Hong Kong in July 2013 shortly after Zhang was said to have broken up with boyfriend Sa Beining, a China Central Television presenter.

At Wang’s concert in Shanghai on November 9, he made the relationship official by announcing his love for Zhang, who was in the audience, from the stage.

Zhang had a number of boyfriends before Wang, including film director Zhang Yimou, who made the actress a star in his “The Road Home” in 1999, and Hong Kong kung fu star Jackie Chan.

Zhang also had a relationship with Eric Fok, grandson of Hong Kong tycoon Henry Fok Ying-tung.

In March 2004 pictures of the couple kissing in a carpark were widely circulated. However, pressure of work was said to be the cause of their eventual breakup.

Zhang was also involved with Vivi Nevo, an Israeli and American venture capitalist who is a major shareholder in multinational media corporation Time Warner. They were pictured together on a beach in the Caribbean in January 2009 and there were reports they were soon to be married. But the couple separated in 2010.

Zhang’s relationship with CCTV presenter Sa was said to have foundered on Zhang’s mother’s dislike for her potential son-in-law.

Wang married his first wife, Qi Dan, an anchorwoman from central Sichuan Province, in 2003 but divorced a year later. A relationship with 18-year-old model Ge Huijie produced a daughter but they broke up without getting married.

Wang’s second wife Kang Zuoru gave birth to a daughter in 2012, but there were reports Wang was being unfaithful.
